Court:
September 17
Part
4: The Press Conference
(Short
But Sweet)
.
.
Here is a short
review. The last time I wrote, we had broken for lunch. Jermaine, for
one, I know was happy. In fact, we were all happy, as we had stomach
grumblings going on, and it didn,t sound like “ABC.” We had no harmony.
.
.
So when Court is in a break, this is how it goes: fans and media are
shuffled out, and then the family. The press has a little courtyard
to go to off to the side. Then there's a main door that lets out to
the front. At the morning break I had gone to the front. But this time,
thank goodness, I went off to the side, because that's where the press
conference was!! We knew there was one after court, but I honestly think
we all thought it would be after court, around 4:30 that day. We were
not informed that Michael and his family and friends were done for the
day. So to say I was taken by surprise when it was revealed the press
conference was about to start, is to put it mildly.
.
Aside:
It is here I would like once and for all to put to rest the issue about
the loudness of the fans during the press conference. My thinking is
this: If we as media didn't have a clue the press conference was going
to be held at that time, I don't know how the fans that went out through
the front would have known, either. The green tarp they throw over the
fencing makes it impossible to see inside this small area. Yes, it was
difficult to hear Mez over the cheers, but I feel it was unintentional.
The fans didn't realize what was going on behind the curtain, just like
in the Wizard of Oz! LOL!
.
Back on Topic:
Now, once I figured out that the press conference was to begin at any
moment, (The mic) was right in front of my face! Duh!), I began the
jockeying for position. That is so funny to me still. We are all adults,
but I wanted to say, “Heyyy, down in front. I cant see!” So, I got as
close to the front as I could without literally pushing Maureen Orth,
who was in front of me, out of my way. I ended up over to the side,
but I had a good spot.
.
Ms. Bains was first up to the mic, Behind her was Karen Faye, Randy,
Jackie, Catherine, Latoya, Janet……, and when Michael came into my sights
– well - that was it. I can't give you one more name. I was trying to
make eye contact with any of them. LOL! I must have looked like such
a rookie.
.
Now, here's a little inside point I noticed. Yes, this was a serious
statement Mez was making, and, yes, the fans screaming in waves was
very distracting, But, I must share with all of you, that ,for the most
part, Michael, with his arm around his mother, kept a straight face.
But when the screams and cheers would erupt, I could see the hint of
the cutest grin come to his face. But he went right back to a straight
face. Then cheers again, and a little grin. It was mesmerizing.
.
At the end of the conference I clapped. I was the only one, so I kind
of figured that media peeps aren't supposed to do that! LOL!. Oh well!
Anyway, as I clapped, I thought, “What in the heck did Mez just say?”
I scolded myself, but then realized there was no need to worry. Raymone
had handed out press releases.
.
.
So when the press conference ended, it was almost like the sun was setting.
Then it hit me!! The'yre on their way home now. I sighed and had to
remind myself there was still more court this afternoon. I told myself,
“Well, Steve Cochran hasn't left the building yet, so I grabbed my press
statement, and got ready for a quick call in to Carol and MJJF before
I prepared for the afternoon session.
