Below Are Some Responses To The Passing Of Mr. Cochran
Dr. Dorothy Height, President, National Council of Negro Women . "Johnnie Cochran was not only a tremendous lawyer, but he was also one who should have been designated as a civil rights leader because he was as concerned about the poor as he was about the rich and famous," says Dr. Dorothy Height, president emeritus of the National Council of Negro Women. "He always recognized the contributions of the National Council of Negro Women. I am especially pleased that some years ago he presented a tribute to me at the Southern Christian Leadership Conference."
Michael Jackson, entertainer . "Johnnie Cochran was a true gentleman who embodied class, brilliance, honesty, and integrity," Superstar Michael Jackson said in a statement. "His fight for justice transcended color, age, or economic status. So many have been touched by his life of service as well as his infectious smile and personality. Johnnie Cochran was a great humanitarian. I loved him, and I will miss him. I am proud to have called him my friend." . ... .
.
Rev. Jesse Jackson, President, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition . "Johnnie Cochran's death is a huge loss to the civil rights struggle," says Rev. Jesse Jackson. "He may have been the tallest tree in the forest since Thurgood Marshall. He became a national frame of reference for the disposed. Some of Johnnie's cases were those he never fought. The idea that you could call Johnnie or Johnnie is coming to town made corporations and violators shake. . The O. J. Simpson case gave him a platform to display what we never knew." . .. ..
.
Charles Ogletree, Harvard University Law Professor . "Johnnie's death is an incalculable loss to America,." says Harvard University Law Professor Charles Ogletree. "He was a mentor, a big brother, and a very dear friend. What people don't appreciate is that he was truly a people's lawyer long before he ever played a role in the O.J. Simpson case. Black America cannot let the O.J. Simpson case define the breadth of his generosity, his commitment to social justice and legal equality, and his willingness to fight for the underdog, particularly as it related to police brutality and the excessive use of force." . ... ] . . Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.) .
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-Md.), former chairman of the Congressional
Black Caucus, said in a statement "As a lawyer myself, I always admired
Mr. Cochran's skill, wit, and determination. I also admired his passion
for the oppressed. His perseverance in fighting for those whose cases
seemed hopeless will always be remembered." ... .
. .. .
Earl G. Graves, Sr., Publisher, BLACK ENTERPRISE . "I
am deeply saddened by Johnnie Cochran's passing," says Earl G. Graves
Sr., Publisher of BLACK ENTERPRISE . "There's no question
that he was a great man, and he's gone too soon. While he will be remembered
by most for his stunning legal victories and newsworthy business successes,
I will remember him for all the good times we shared as friends. Johnnie
was warm and generous. He was a caring, unselfish friend, a loving husband
and father, and a wonderful human being whose commitment to serving
others could not have been more sincere. The qualities that made him
an outstanding counselor-his wisdom, sense of fairness and an unfailing
ability to listen to and respect others-also made him a very special
friend. My family and I will sorely miss him."
