MJFanvention2011 Gears Up for Chicago

Childhood friends and insiders featured at Michael Jackson event

David Holloway remembers sneaking off on lunch hour to the community candy store with a young Michael Jackson when they both were students at Garnett Elementary School in Gary.

Holloway attended first through fifth grade with the late performer and has authored a soon-to-be-released book entitled, “Michael Jackson's Secret Childhood". Holloway said the book chronicles Jackson’s Gary school days. Not many true stories exist around those years said Holloway. A lot of his younger years were reconstructed by Motown. But Holloway said Jackson had a normal elementary school childhood.

“We were both quiet and that’s how we became friends. We sat next to each other in every class because I was an “H” and he was a “J”. And we both loved candy.”

In fact, they bonded as friends over their love of penny candy. Holloway said he was Jackson’s best friend while at school but didn’t spend much time with him after school except to play a little while on the school playground after the music lessons that were offered by the school.

“Michael always said he would be a star. He just had a presence.” The summer the Jackson’s moved away Holloway was spending time away from home. When he returned he learned that the family had moved to California. But he always remembered his friend Michael and supported him by buying his albums.

Holloway’s book will be released in June 2012. It details many incidents in the life of a young Michael Jackson. Holloway will make an appearance at this year’s MJFanvention2011 , August 26 - 28 at the Inn of Chicago to preview his book.

The MJFanvention2011 will also feature Larry Nimmer, Jackson’s personal videographer, who will show video of home scenes of Jackson in Neverland; Jake Austen, Chicago zine writer and music historian that will talk about the Jackson’s early days in the Chicago area; Geraldine Hughes, who was the secretary to the attorney involved with the 1993 molestation trial; and Chicago Attorney Ray Waters who will explain the issues surrounding Jackson’s estate and his family.

The MJFanvention2011 weekend will also feature a dance party at Navy Pier on August 27 from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. And on August 28, the event will feature a birthday cake contest.

Tickets are still available for the weekend pass that includes all events and a tour of the Chicago locations where the Jacksons’ performed along with a tour to his childhood home. Go to mjfanvention.com for ticket and schedule information.
